Very few people know the name Charity Wallace. She was a 26 year old that became apart of the White House staff when George W. Bush was elected.
One of the first responsibilities given to her was to help put together the National Cathedral Prayer service that took place as a part of President Bush’s inauguration ceremonies. Little did she know just 10 months later God was going to use this experience in a dramatic way.
September 11, 2001, started out just like any other day, but by 8:50 that morning we only began to realize the tragedy we would experience that day. A day of infamy.
Charity had gone across the street to get some bagels. Only to return to find the World Trade Centers on fire and then suddenly collapsing, to hear that the Pentagon had just been hit, and then to have a hurried evacuation of the White House. Her head was spinning. All she could think of as she was leaving the White House is that “I have got to get out of town. I am going to drive to California to be with my family.”
She got to her apartment and began to pack her suitcase. Then she heard this still small voice “you need to stay.” Her pastor back home in speaking to her mom even said “The Lord has put Charity in the White House for such a time as this.”
The next day the White House staff was in temporary offices and her supervisor asked her to gather all the information together from the inauguration prayer service. There would be a prayer service on Friday, just 48 hours from now and she was in charge. She and her team worked around the clock to get the speakers and people in place for the service. On Thursday they even had to evacuate the offices again, but she knew God was in this and He would make a way.
The service took place Friday September 12th at noon. All faiths were represented, but the service was decidedly Christian. The president's remarks gave faith and hope to millions of people who were in despair. Billy Graham preached the message and provided a clear explanation of the Gospel- Christ was lifted up.
It turns out that the service became the most-watched religious service in the history of the world. In nation after nation, through simultaneous translation the majority of the population heard the Word of God.
