In the beginning of the Bible, there are three principles that should revolutionize every business professional’s life. In Genesis 1, we learn these three things:
· God is a worker,
· God is a creator,
· God does good work,
These concepts are revolutionary, when a person further understands that people are made in the image of God. This leads to a profound depth of meaning. When men and women work, create, or do things with excellence, we reflect the image of God to the world.
· Man as a worker—When we work, we do something that God does. He works– we work. No matter what our work is, it has dignity in God’s eyes.
· Man as creative- When we create we do something God does. When we design a building, a computer program, a marketing brochure, an insurance plan, a workflow improvement, or solve a problem, etc.. – we are bearing the image of God.
· Man as a producer of quality work—God looked at His creation and called it very good. As His image bearers, we need to strive for the highest quality of work as well. We reflect His image when we do good work.
When we begin to work in this way, our work takes on a new dignity. It reflects God to the world around us. It makes us realize, that yes we work for our boss or company, but ultimately we are doing our work, “as unto the Lord.”
Furthermore, not may people have ever considered that God has called and equipped them to care for their co-workers ? That they are the pastor at their place of work. That He has called them to care for and be available for those in their office or company.
When a person realizes that he has given them 10, 20, 50 or more people to care for in this way, their sense of calling grows even stronger. It is not their pastor that is assigned this responsibility, IT IS THEM!
Finally, not only has God called the workplace believer to be an ambassador at their place of work by way of personal ministry to others. He has also called them to a place of stewardship – not just of their gifts, skills, abilities and talents…. But in the area of the corporate culture, the companies they work with, and the cultural life of the city that their company influences.
Believers who have never been equipped in this area quickly abdicate their God given role to be cultural leaders and influencers. Consider this observation by Gene Vieth of World Magazine –
“The major revolution taking place in the culture—the uprising against the family—is being advanced by what was once the bastion of conservatism, namely, businesses. The vanguard of radical social change is turning out to be capitalists in gray flannel suits.
The government may debate the propriety of homosexual marriage or civil unions….. But governmental action is almost a moot point in the flood of businesses giving family benefits to homosexual couples. More than half of Fortune 500 companies include "sexual orientation" in their nondiscrimination policies, according to the activist group the Human Rights Campaign”
Life stewards need to be at work. When the culture goes in the ditch and the very image of God in a persons life is perverted and then this is further institutionalized in the culture, evangelism becomes more and more difficult – because people pervert the image of God.
